Kick – off Power Update from Microsoft Flow.

New to Power Update?

Power Update has since 2015 assisted companies with automating Power Queries in Excel or in Power BI Desktop. When comparing Power Update and Power BI Service refresh, our clients are mentioning:

  • No limits per day. Processing happens on the client side.
  • Start a job down to every 1 minute
  • Refresh Power Queries from Excel and publish to SharePoint.
  • Push data from Power Query to a SQL Table
  • …and more…

Kick off Power Update from Microsoft Flow

The latest version of Power Update allows users to trigger task by calling a URL Address.

How does it work?

Let’s look at what you need to do:

  • If you are a new user, download and install Power Update from here: http://www.power-planner.com/Portals/0/Downloads/PowerUpdateSetup_x64_beta_vm.msi
  • If you are an existing user, you will have to upgrade to this version by following these steps:
    • back up all .config files from:
      C:\Program Files\PowerPlanner\Power Update
    • install this version: http://www.power-planner.com/Portals/0/Downloads/PowerUpdateSetup_x64_beta_vm.msi
    • copy back the .config files to
      C:\Program Files\PowerPlanner\Power Update
    • if using Excel 2016 copy all files from C:\Program Files\PowerPlanner\Power Update\xl2016
      to
      C:\Program Files\PowerPlanner\Power Update

After all is said and done, it is time to put the new feature to practice:

  1. Define a new task in Power Update
  2. Open your preferred web browser
  3. Enter this in the address bar: localhost:8000/StartTask/taskname where the ‘taskname’ is the name of your task
  4. Voila, your task is now running.

Putting it all together!

  1. Create a Microsoft Flow
  2. Let it do, what you want it to do.
  3. Then call the url above, and your Power Update job will start and refresh Excel or Power BI Desktop from Microsoft Flow
